UPDATE: According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), South Congaree Police Chief Steve Jonas was driving east in a Dodge Charger belonging to the South Congaree Police Department around 6:15 p.m. on Aug. 27, when he crossed the centerline on South Beltline Blvd. in Columbia and collided with a GMC Terrain SUV that was traveling west on the road.

Jonas and three people in the SUV were transported to an area hospital.

No information regarding what caused Jonas to veer into oncoming traffic was provided. Jonas has been placed on administrative leave, and the crash continues to be under investigation by the SCHP.
