A Nelson County judge certified charges against Ethan Garfield and Autumn Woods on Thursday in the death of their 6-week-old son, sending the cases against the young parents to a grand jury.

Both Garfield, 20, and Woods, 18, face charges of felony homicide and child abuse in the death of their son, Cyrus Garfield, who was taken by emergency responders to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville on Dec. 10, 2024, and later died.

Nelson Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Judge Jennifer Stille ruled at the end of Thursday’s hearing that the commonwealth’s attorney’s office presented enough evidence to show probable cause, allowing both cases to move forward to a grand jury in Nelson Circuit Court on Sept. 23.
