PlymouthLive readers have heard that the council has warned that the cost of removing dozens of St George’s Crosses painted on Plymouth’s roads and roundabouts could run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Over the bank holiday weekend, 20 highway locations were defaced with unauthorised red-and-white markings. Despite public pleas for residents not to paint symbols on public highways, more flags have since appeared on signs and walls across the city — fuelled by a social media campaign.

A Plymouth City Council spokesperson said: “The unauthorised markings will now be assessed and removed in order of priority based on the risk to road safety. Each one could cost up to £660 to repaint, due to the need for specialist materials and traffic management measures to protect our staff working
