President Donald Trump has spent several weeks criticizing a century-old U.S. Senate tradition called the “blue slip process,” which allows senators to sign off on some federal judge and U.S. attorney nominees in their home state.

The practice effectively allows senators to block presidential nominees they oppose.

Trump has threatened to sue in response, telling reporters this week the senate process makes it “impossible for me as president to appoint a judge or U.S. attorney because they have a gentlemen’s agreement.”

His complaints about the process have received pushback from some Republican senators, including Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.
