With “Caught Stealing,” the great directing auteur Darren Aronofsky steps away from his typically intense combination of trippy psychological drama, last seen in the challenging 2022 film “The Whale.” This time around, he works from a 2004 novel by Charlie Huston, who also pens this adaptation. And this move by Aronofsky proves to be a smart one, as he finds sufficiently pulpy material and a sympathetic, enigmatic hero worthy of his normally lofty ambitions.
