Almost three million electric motors for gable and roof-mounted attic fans have been recalled for a faulty safety cutoff that poses a risk for the motor to short circuit and possibly create a fire while in use.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday, Aug. 28.

The fans were sold nationally and distributed by Dallas-based Air Vent between August 2003 and December 2013.
