For Mitch Marner, it was as ugly as it gets as he at times wilted under the harsh media glare.

In his mercurial time as a Leaf, Marner’s uncomfortable relationship with the media was an ongoing shadow over what devolved into a volatile narrative with the team’s rabid fan base.

In fact, it often seemed as though the former Leafs star forward was using his disdain for the questions – if not those questioning him – as a crutch for the team’s shortcomings, perceived and otherwise.
