NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - After levees failed during Hurricane Katrina, thousands of displaced New Orleans residents were evacuated to neighboring states. Among those helping them was Dr. Maurice Sholas, who found himself caring for evacuees in Houston.

Sholas had patients at Children’s Hospital New Orleans the weekend before Katrina struck.
“That weekend I had four patients admitted to me at Children’s Hospital uptown, so I was rounding on them Monday and since they were my patients I rounded on that Saturday as well,” he said.
Sholas admitted he had not been following the hurricane’s strength or movement in the Gulf.
