Each year, Zozobra goes up in flames to set the community free of last year's glooms, fears, and worries. During the burning of Old Man Gloom, a spectacular fireworks show is displayed.
But, did you know the fireworks show has been orchestrated by a single family for 78 years?
Jim Burnett's family has been responsible for the fireworks at Zozobra since the mid-1940s. "We actually started doing Zozobra back in the mid-forties. My father actually was called to assist Will Schuster," Burnett said. His father shared stories of Shuster's quick mind and artistic talent, which left a lasting impression on him.
Burnett recalled his first encounter with the event at the age of five, saying, "I'll be honest, when that monster was up there and burning it scared me to death."
