Nearly two years ago, Macon Blair’s remake of The Toxic Avenger premiered at Fantastic Fest, an Austin-based film festival, to rapturous applause. I should know, I was there, and for one week it was the hot ticket all attendees were eager to discuss. Since then, there has been radio silence on the film—to the point where Blair and his star Peter Dinklage have openly wondered whether it would even get a distribution deal. But now The Toxic Avenger’s national release is finally here and there’s an “unrated” cut too that promises to gross out even the most hardened fans of Toxie (as the Avenger is affectionately called; voiced by Dinklage with actor Luisa Guerriro in the suit and makeup). The only question left, then, is whether the wait was worth it.
