Though the U.S. Air Force in 2021 refused to provide military funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt, the sole rioter to be fatally shot during the January 6 attack on the Capitol and who served in the Air Force and Air National Guard, that decision has been overturned. In an August letter to Babbitt’s family, Matthew Lohmeier, the under secretary of the Air Force, wrote that he was “persuaded that the previous determination was incorrect” after reviewing new information about her death. The move comes after the government paid Babbitt’s family a nearly $5 million wrongful death settlement in July, and is the Trump administration’s latest attempt to reframe January 6, when rioters stormed the Capitol building in a “mass frenzy” to overthrow the results of the 2020 election.
