CAYCE, S.C. — Cayce Police confirmed on Friday that a student had been taken into custody after a gun was found in his backpack at an area school.

Police corroborated details shared with News19 that a tip had led police to a student's backpack, where they found the loaded gun on Friday morning.

Police added that the 14-year-old was arrested for having a firearm on school grounds and taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. He will be charged with the unlawful carry of a firearm as well, officials said.

Police credited the school resource officer for acting swiftly to handle the situation. News19 has requested a statement from the Lexington Two school district.
