LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The Webb County District Attorney’s Office said Friday, August 29, it had secured an arrest warrant for Bernadette Mays on 31 counts of animal cruelty following an investigation into Freedom Ranch Animal Rescue. Mays’ bond was set at $77,000.

The investigation began after an individual, identified as Rangel, filed a complaint against the facility with the District Attorney on Aug. 20. On Aug. 25, the DA and an investigator took over the case.

The DA visited Laredo Animal Care Services, where dogs surrendered by Freedom Ranch were found to be dehydrated, emaciated, and infested with fleas and ticks. DA Isidro Alaniz said it was obvious the animals were neglected and were not being cared for.
