For many years, my kids and I would load into the car and head south on I-35 , road tripping from Oklahoma to Texas , on Friday afternoons. My son played ice hockey, and many of our league games were Saturdays and Sundays in the DFW area.

Anyone who’s made that drive knows that Friday rush hour is not the time you want to be on the interstate, particularly in Denton where I-35 splits into east and west spurs.

Yet that was often where we would end up several nights a month during the hockey season, making fantastic time all the way to the Red River and beyond, right up to a few miles before the split. There, the flow of traffic would cease to a crawl, sometimes stopping completely.

For the kids and me, this traffic jam became the perfect excuse to stop for dinner.
