The California Highway Patrol is starting its annual Labor Day holiday maximum enforcement period Friday at 6 p.m., with extra officers on the roads until Monday night at midnight to crack down on drunk and impaired drivers.
Last year, 21 deaths were linked to impaired driving over the Labor Day holiday weekend. More than 1,100 people were arrested for driving under the influence.
Overall, 21 deaths last year were linked to impaired drivers.
The CHP hopes to bring the number of deaths down by having every available officer on the road this weekend.
They ask people to call 911 and report a driver who is suspected of being impaired.
