FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Reports show teachers spend a national average of $900 of their own money per school year on their classrooms - nearly 50% more than a decade ago.

Upon learning this statistic, Meijer reached out to 21Alive, wishing to help in our community.

On Friday, that wish came true.

Representatives from the store surprised a teacher with a $900 Meijer gift card for a back-to-school shopping spree in the near future.

Fort Wayne Community Schools ‘Secondary Teacher of the Year’ Sierra Miranda, a special education teacher at South Side High School, was the lucky recipient.
