Conflicting guidance over whether to vaccinate children for COVID-19 is forcing Metro Detroit parents to figure out what guidelines to follow as a new school year gets underway.

Some Michigan doctors and health departments said they support the American Academy of Pediatrics’ new recommendations about vaccinating children for COVID-19, which differ from the guidance by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The conflicting advice is complicated by this week’s news that the Food and Drug Administration approved updated COVID-19 shots but narrowed their use for younger adults and children to those with at least one high-risk health condition, such as asthma or obesity.
