Roughly half of Minnesota's public school students continue to test below grade-level in math and reading, according to the latest statewide data.

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) on Friday released the 2024-2025 test data, showing that students have performed similarly in testing benchmarks on the two subjects over the past few years, following drops seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) tests taken over the past three springs have determined that 50% of students are proficient in reading and 45% are proficient in math. Proficiency rates have been down about 10 percentage points since the 2018-2019 school year, when statewide test scores were 59% in reading and 55% in math.
