MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - This year’s first case of West Nile Virus in Dane County has been recorded, a Facebook post from Public Health Madison & Dane County said Thursday.

Officials said an infected mosquito bit someone, marking the first case in the county for 2025.

The highest risk for West Nile Virus is usually in August and September, health officials said.

To prevent mosquito bites and mosquito-spread illnesses, officials recommend wearing long, loose-fitting clothing, getting rid of standing water and using insect repellent with one of the following:

20 to 30% DEET

10 to 20% picaridin

10 to 20% IR3535

30 to 40% oil of lemon eucalyptus for kids over 3 years old
