WASHINGTON — Children’s National Hospital is joining a list of hospital systems across the country to end its gender-affirming care , specifically prescriptions for transgender children.

The hospital first announced the decision with a statement last month saying it will halt prescriptions starting on Aug. 30 because of “ escalating legal and regulatory risks .”

“After this date, we no longer will be prescribing medications, evaluating patients for or recommending medications, or providing services for monitoring of medications, including laboratory evaluations, for gender-affirming care,” the statement read.

The hospital's Gender Development Program will continue to offer mental and behavioral health services.
