LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Bernadette Mays, founder of Freedom Ranch, denied allegations of animal cruelty in an interview with KGNS on Thursday, August 28, hours before her arrest was announced. At her request, the station did not show her face.

Mays said her dogs were always fed and had access to water, though she admitted the enclosures sometimes became dirty. She placed some of the blame on her vice president, saying more oversight was needed.

“That’s where I’m guilty… I’m guilty of trusting the wrong people, and I’m guilty of just never saying no… I just said yes to every dog, and I just felt so much pressure from Laredo… I felt so much pressure,” Mays said.

Earlier Friday, the Webb County District Attorney announced Mays’ arrest on multiple charges of animal cruelty .
