Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is demanding that the Arizona Department of Education stop automatically approving education voucher expenses under $2,000.
Her office sent a letter on Aug. 29 to Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne, saying she was concerned about the Arizona Department of Education's "apparent failure to appropriately manage" voucher funds.
Education voucher money can be used to pay for private school tuition or homeschool expenses. Families who accept voucher dollars often receive about $7,000 per year per child, although students with disabilities can be eligible for tens of thousands of dollars more.
