SUFFOLK, Va. — More than 20 horses were seized after the Suffolk Animal Control Division found six dead horses on a Buckhorn Drive property. Now, two suspects will have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in vet expenses for the horses seized from their property.

This comes after the property owners, William Shelton and Janet Asto,n were indicted weeks ago, each facing 96 charges relating to animal neglect .

“I just want all of the animals taken care of,” Suffolk local Jeanne Ireland said.

Ireland said she’s followed this incident for months. On August 26, there was a new development in the case: a court order shows the pair will have to pay about $39,000 in veterinarian expenses for all of the horses seized from their property.
