JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Jefferson County sheriff is reporting that there is a significant reduction when it comes to “major crimes.”

Sheriff Mark Pettway shared at a press conference Friday the county is seeing a 23% reduction in some of the worst crimes that tear families apart.

“We’re going in the right direction,” Pettway said.

From January to August, the sheriff reports that homicides, rapes, robberies, burglaries, and auto thefts are all down county-wide.

“When we see a reduction like this, 23%, that means that we’re making progress,” he said.

Sheriff Pettway highlighted two tactics that he said are leading to arrests.
