Mardi Gras 2006 marked New Orleans' recovery and resilience, as the city celebrated the event almost six months after Hurricane Katrina hit.

"It is our stronghold it means everything to us," said Virginia Saussey, a member of Muses. Advertisement

"Oh, after Katrina, Carnival could not have been more important," said Henri Schendler, a historian.

The hurricane had left many Carnival krewes in disarray, with dens flooded and riders scattered across the country.

Despite these challenges, the krewes were determined to continue the tradition.

"It was very, very important that carnival only happened, but that had have its spirit on display proudly and joyfully," said Schendler.

The event provided a sense of normalcy for many.
