A dramatic counter-terror investigation is under way after authorities uncovered a plan to hijack a commercial airliner at an Australian airport and divert it to the Middle East.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed a suspect has been taken into custody, stressing there is no current threat to aviation.

Suppression orders mean only limited details can be reported, but intelligence agencies and a national counter-terror taskforce are leading the inquiry.

“This matter is before the court, with open-source reporting on this individual’s court case in July 2025. Suppression orders remain in place,” the AFP said.
