After a 20-year run, London’s indoor cycling track – one of only two velodromes in Ontario – is closing its doors this fall after years of dwindling membership numbers and financial hurdles it can’t outrun.
The decision to close the facility was made on Thursday during the annual general meeting of the Forest City Velodrome, the non-profit group that runs the facility at the former London Gardens/Ice House near Wellington Road and Highway 401.
“We’ve been going back and forth with this issue of whether the velodrome can stay open because of the costs for years now, and last night our final kind of decision was that we can’t; it’s not viable,” said Daniela Liska, a member of the organization.
