PHOENIX — A tense scene unfolded outside the Papago Military Installation on Thursday afternoon when a Scottsdale man showed up at the gate with a military-grade explosive, hoping someone on base could take a look at it.
It turned out to be a WWI-era projectile, according to Luke Air Force Base.
Phoenix police say they found no criminal intent by the man, who identified himself only as Jeff when speaking exclusively with 12News after being detained for several hours.
"I wasn't sure if it was dangerous. My mom and I sat there for a minute, and I'm like, I should take it to the Reserve Base," Jeff said.
But his decision triggered emergency procedures.
Police bomb squads X-rayed the device before calling in explosive experts from Luke Air Force Base.
