PHOENIX — Five people, including a pedestrian and a child, are in critical condition after a crash in east Phoenix, according to officials from the city's fire department.

At least five vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened at 40th Street and McDowell Road just before 8 p.m. One person had to be rescued from their vehicle, officials said.

The intersection will be closed for an extended period, officials with the police department said.
