SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – A freight train struck a pedestrian Friday night in downtown Summerville, according to police.

Officers are on the scene where an unidentified pedestrian was walking on the tracks near the Main Street crossing by the Summerville Museum, according to the Summerville Police Department.

The pedestrian was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train heading eastbound towards Charleston, police said. The intersection at Main Street and Cedar Street was temporarily closed, but has since reopened.

Motorists should avoid the area and use alternate routes.
