COLUMBIA — The city of Columbia is warning residents of an email scam impersonating incoming Community Development Director Clinton Smith .
The email has been sent to numerous individuals and is specifically directed toward people who have short-term rentals or are seeking a rental permit, according to a Facebook post from the city .
The city says red flags to look out for include the email not coming from an official CoMo.gov address or the email requesting payment receipts.
"The biggest red flag that can help you avoid being scammed is to look at the email and help train your eyes to look at the email you receive very carefully," said Khesha Duncan, the Better Business Bureau Columbia regional director.
