CARROLLTON, Ga. — A spokesperson for the University of West Georgia said reports of a man on campus with a gun is confirmed as a hoax.

The university sent out a text on Friday night alerting students that officers were responding to reports of a man with the weapon near Ingram Library.

Two other universities sent out alerts reporting similar incidents on the same night.

The University of Georgia said at around 8:45 p.m., officers received a call of a shooter in the Main Library area , but later said evidence suggested it was a hoax.

Clark Atlanta University Police later stated that reports of an active shooter on campus were also inaccurate and a hoax.

Similar incidents have been occurring at multiple university and college campuses nationwide.
