SAULT STE. MARIE — The Chippewa County Historical Society has honored Justin and Caryn Knepper with its Preservation Award for their efforts to revitalize a historic building on Ashmun Street.

The couple purchased the property at 824 Ashmun St. in 2020. Originally built between 1902 and 1906, the building underwent a two-year renovation before reopening.

It now houses Deep Roots Salon on the main level and three apartment units above, which have been in use for the past three years.

“It really means a lot to me to see our Historical Society step up and put a focus on that and really show property owners how much they care about what we are doing with our buildings,” Knepper said. “I would love to see more historic building owners get involved in the Historical Society.
