On this date in 1949, Captain Chester C. Wood took command of the USS Fargo, succeeding Captain W. F. Petersen, who was departing after earning the ship top honors as the Atlantic fleet’s outstanding cruiser.

NEW SKIPPER of the USS Fargo is Capt. Chester Clark Wood, at the right. This picture was taken in 1944 when he was awarded the Legion of Merit for anti-sub work and the presentation was made by the late Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox.
