The former New York Wheel site is being slated for re-development along with the declining Empire Outlets multiplex. Staten Island needs a cultural anchor, not another empty lot full of empty promises. If we design with our communities in mind, commerce and culture can thrive collectively.

Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks and the NYC EDC (Economic Development Corporation) are charged with deciding what happens to the space next. With yet another failed redevelopment of the site looming, policymakers have a choice: They can either double down on a failing model, catering to tourists that only see Staten Island as a passing view on the ferry, or they can choose to invest in the North Shore community by making the Empire Outlets site a unique cultural resource for Staten Island.
