BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A somber goodbye was held Friday for Genesis Mata, the 8-year-old Bakersfield girl allegedly tortured and murdered by her father and stepmother.
Family members shared video and photos of the private funeral for the little girl before she was laid to rest at Union Cemetery. The service was filled with images of unicorns, which family members say, Genesis loved dearly.
Genesis' body was found with severe trauma in a bathtub at the La Quinta Inn off Buck Owens Blvd on Aug. 2.
Her father, Ray Mata Jr. and stepmother Gabriela Bustamonte are charged with first-degree murder, torture, aggravated mayhem and child abuse in connection to her death.
A hearing in the case is set for mid-October.
