COLUMBIA — Film producer and local resident David Raymond Brown was arrested Aug. 27 on federal charges alleging he defrauded multiple people and organizations of around $12 million.

Brown, 39, was charged by a federal grand jury in the Central District of California with nine counts of wire fraud, 10 counts of money laundering and two counts of aggravated identity theft.

He moved to West Columbia in 2023 after the Los Angeles Times published an article highlighting multiple fraud accusations against him.

He is being detained at Barnwell County Detention Center .

Brown’s indictment alleges that from December 2021 until earlier this month, he moved money from film studio bank accounts to his accounts under the guise of production expenses.
