The No. 3 Brenham Cubs answered any questions about their state championship contending status Friday night with a statement victory.

The Cubs found complementary football from an early defensive slugfest, leading to a 34-13 over No. 8 Huntsville.

Brenham and Huntsville’s defenses slugged it out during the first quarter, trading punts for the first four drives.

Senior defensive lineman Mason Seeber earned a big third-down sack and another three-and-out drive kept the Hornets at bay.

Early in the game, senior linebacker Caleb Espinoza gained confidence as the Cubs’ early stops stacked on top of each other.

“After the first stop, we knew it was over,” he said, “Me and all of the defense were hyped. We were already ready for the next drive.”
