The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) could implement a new way to charge riders that would eliminate the monthly pass and replace it with a system that would give riders free fares after a certain number of rides.
The proposal is part of recent report that will be considered by the TTC's strategic planning committee at a meeting next week as one way to increase transit ridership.
Fare capping could simplify the ride experience while eliminating the upfront cost and give all riders transfer benefits currently only included for those in the One Fare Program, the report says. The current monthly pass for an adult costs $156 dollars, with the report noting that riders need to reach a certain number of trips to use its full value.
