On Sunday, the Vernon Pet Pantry hosted a pet food drive to celebrate National Dog Day, which was earlier this week.

“We think about providing food for those who can’t afford it and a lot of times we forget the pets,” said Mayor Daniel Champagne.

The pantry first opened its doors in October 2024 and since then says it has helped thousands of people.

“We’ve had a lot of people donating a lot of things,” said Jim Tedford. Tedford has been involved in the initiative since the beginning. “It was pretty good, you’d be amazed.”

Community members stopped by the Saxony Dog Park to donate bags and cans of dry and wet food throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
