Mother Nature made Levi Wesche wait quite a while before securing a win in his 100th game as head coach of the Bozeman High football program.

With 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter Friday against Missoula Hellgate at Van Winkle Stadium, the game went into a lightning delay at 9:10 p.m. Heavy rain and wind accompanied the flashes of light across the sky. Play resumed at 10:44 p.m., and the Hawks put the finishing touches on a 46-20 victory at 11:12 p.m., at long last bidding adieu to the opening week of high school football.

Wesche’s first season as the head coach was in 2016, when his tenure started with a victory by forfeit after, coincidentally, Hellgate did not field a varsity team. At the start of his 10th season, Friday’s win was much more satisfying — even with the lengthy
