A Josh Cullen own goal gave United a deserved lead in the first half but their failure to take chances cost them as Lyle Foster equalised for Burnley 10 minutes into the second half.
Bryan Mbeumo immediately regained United's lead but yet another Altay Bayindir error gifted Burnley a second equaliser through Jaidon Anthony.
But Bruno Fernandes stepped up to convert an added time penalty and give United their first win of the campaign.
