FORT COLLINS — A year ago, Thompson Valley’s Trent Gabrielson finished a close second to Loveland’s Colin Olson at the early-season John Martin XC Invitational at Fort Collins High School.

With Olson now graduated, Gabrielson wasn’t going to be denied in his final run on the meet’s course.

A senior, Gabrielson crossed the line in 15 minutes, 11 seconds, which was 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Fort Collins’ Cadel Ruthman.

“It feels amazing,” Gabrielson said. “I’ve always wanted to win this race. It’s like a home meet for us. We always come here every year.

“I started out in the lead and Cadel hung with me for about two miles, two and a half. Pretty much the whole race. I just closed on him at the end, and it felt pretty good.”
