Summer seemed about to end in Washington on Saturday, preparing the way for autumn with a burst of grand and glorious weather that honored the season that is concluding and offered hints of the one that is to come.

A more wondrous day of airy delight in the District seemed difficult to recall. To apply the laws of economics to the data of atmospheric science, Saturday may have been the marvelous sort of day for which demand must always exceed supply.
