The Government is looking into reforming the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in order to speed up removals and deportations, a Cabinet Secretary has said.

People facing deportation or removal from the UK have appealed against deportation using Article 8 of the ECHR, claiming it would interfere with their family and private life if they were removed.

Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary, told Sky News : “We have to have clear control over our own borders, a fair system, with rules that are followed. And we will act to remove people who don’t have a right to be here.”

Phillipson clarified that Article 8, which protects the right to a private and family life – is being probed to see whether it needs “updating and reforming for the modern age”.
