CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte community continues to mourn the woman stabbed to death on the Light Rail in South End earlier this month. Iryna Zarutska, 23, was one of several people honored in a candlelight vigil Sunday night.

“In a war-torn country, she’s thinking ‘okay, I escaped.’ Can you imagine the joy she felt arriving in America and she’s thinking ‘okay, I’ve got my freedom I can get on this train and go about my business freely,’ and then her life is taken,” advocate Tigress McDaniel said.

The vigil was held at the East-West Boulevard Light Rail station. That's near where Zarutska was killed. Decarlos Brown, the man charged with murder for Zarutska's deadly stabbing, was denied bond on Friday. Vigil attendees noted Brown's criminal history before the homicide.
