ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — A 41-year-old man died Sunday at the Alexander County Detention Center while awaiting transfer to state prison, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office.
Herman Eugene Williams of Hiddenite died Aug. 31 at the detention facility. Williams had been sentenced earlier this month and was going to be moved to the North Carolina Department of Corrections.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the death, which the sheriff's office said is standard procedure in such cases.
