ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man died and another man was injured after they exchanged gunfire during a dispute Saturday evening in Asheboro, the Asheboro Police Department said.

Police received reports of shots fired around 7:06 p.m. in the parking lot of Marshall’s at 1418 East Dixie Drive. Officers found 23-year-old Alexander Benitez-Hernandez with a gunshot wound to his upper chest. They gave aid until medical personnel arrived, but Benitez-Hernandez died at the scene.

Other officers spotted a red Ford F-250 speeding on East Salisbury Street and stopped the vehicle. They found the driver with a gunshot wound to the leg and identified him as being involved in the shooting. Officers provided aid before taking him to an out-of-county medical facility, where he remains in stable condition.
