The Toronto Blue Jays have hit a late-season snag, and closing pitcher Jeff Hoffman is catching a lot of heat for the team’s struggles.
With 25 games remaining on the schedule, the Blue Jays’ AL East lead has now been cut to two games with the New York Yankees breathing down their necks. It hasn’t helped that Toronto has dropped four of its last six games in disappointing fashion.
Two of those losses came in the ninth inning with Hoffman failing to live up to his role as the Blue Jays’ closer. On Saturday night, he allowed three runs to score off three hits and two home runs, powering the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 victory in Toronto.
That brought up Hoffman’s total to 12 home runs given up in the ninth inning or later this season, which broke an unfortunate franchise record.
