METAIRIE, La. — Authorities are searching Lake Pontchartrain for a missing boater after a sailboat struck the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway early Sunday.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said the crash happened near mile marker 14. Two people were on board when the incident occurred.

According to officials, a man went overboard and remains missing. A woman was rescued from the vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Wildlife and Fisheries is leading the investigation. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Coast Guard are assisting.

Officials said a heavy police presence is expected on the lake throughout the day as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
